Munich Conference on Security Policy meets for the 39th time |

This year, the 39th Munich Conference on Security Policy is to be held from 7 to 9 February, once again at the Bayerischer Hof". Around 40 foreign and defence ministers are to take part in order to discuss the current issues of security policy.
The conference is an informal event and serves as a discussion forum for foreign and security policy issues. The participants appreciate that the event enables open discussion on current issues of foreign and security policy.
The Federal Government is to be represented by Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer and Defence Minister Peter Struck, who will also be appearing as speakers. On the US side, Defence Minister Donald Rumsfeld shall be participating. In addition, the NATO Secretary General, Lord Robertson, the High Representative of the Common Foreign and Security Policy of the European Union, Javier Solana, and the foreign and defence ministers of Russia, China, India, Pakistan and Iran have promised to attend.
Among other things, the participants are to exchange views on the position and outlook of the global fight against terrorism, as well as future development in the Middle East and Persian Gulf.
Around 400 journalists have registered to attend in order to follow and present live reports on the conference.
The event is financed by the Press and Information Office of the Federal Government. The conference was founded in 1964 by Ewald Heinrich von Kleist under the name "Wehrkundetagung". (ends)
