PARIS --- Direction Générale de l’Armement, the French defence procurement agency, on Dec 30, 2015 awarded NH Industries (NHI*) an order for six NH90-TTH Caiman tactical transport helicopters.
This order is one of the concrete outcomes supported by Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian as part of the update of the 2014-2019 multiyear program law. It significantly reinforces the French army’s equipment inventory, and brings to 74 the number of NH90-TTH helicopters on order, 44 of which will have been delivered by 2019.
The NH90 is a twin turbine, 11 tonne helicopter developed in cooperation by Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Spain. It is the first military helicopter to adopt fly-by-wire flight controls. The NH90 is available in two versions: the Tactical Transport Helicopter (TTH) for ground forces support missions, and the NATO Frigate Helicopter (NFH) for naval missions including anti-ship, anti-submarine and Search And Rescue (SAR).
To date, 15 NFH have been delivered to the French navy (out of 27 ordered) and 17 TTH have been delivered to the army.
The NH90-TTHs are progressively replacing the Pumas operated by the French army aviation command, ALAT (Aviation Légère de l’Armée de Terre) for tactical transport missions, carrying up to 20 soldiers or 2.5 tonnes of freight, for medical evacuation or as a flying command post.
They are fitted with the full range of combat equipment, including HMSD night vision sights, armor protection and electronic countermeasures, and are also fitted out for fast roping and cargo hook operations. They are also fitted with special air intake filters for desert operations.
In 2025, the NH90-TTH will be the mainstay of the French military helicopter fleet and, together with upgraded Cougars and Caracals, will meet the multiyear program law’s objective of having 115 tactical transport helicopters in service.
(*) The NH90 programme is managed for France by DGA working together with NAHEMA (NATO HElicopter Management Agency) for the overall management of the program. The NHI consortium is formed by Airbus Helicopters together with AgustaWestland (now Finmeccanica Helicopters) and Fokker. NH90s for the French armed forces are built on the Marignane facility of Airbus Helicopters France.

MARIGNANE, France --- The French Defence Procurement Agency (DGA) has ordered six additional NH90 helicopters in tactical troop transport (TTH) configuration, bringing the total amount of NH90 TTHs on order for the French Army Aviation to 74.
“The French armed forces have deployed the NH90 operationally in Mali where its outstanding endurance, versatility and manoeuvrability have been greatly appreciated”, said Guillaume Faury, President and CEO of Airbus Helicopters. “This additional order for six NH90s, to be delivered in 2017 - 2019, confirms the essential role that new-generation multirole helicopters play in modern operations” he added.
Combat-proven since 2010, the NH90 TTH has been successfully deployed by several countries in different theatres of operation. With a wide modular cabin, large sliding doors on each side and a rear ramp, the NH90 can be rapidly configured for such missions as troop transport with a 20-seat configuration, light vehicle transport, casualty evacuation with 12 stretchers, cargo airlift with standard NATO pallets, armed tactical transport, as well as combat search and rescue. An extensive list of role-tailored equipment allows the NH90 to fit operators’ mission needs.
The NH90’s 4-axis autopilot and fly-by-wire controls contribute to safety and maximum flight performance in severe operating conditions. The NH90 is the first serial helicopter in the world to be equipped with fly-by-wire technologies, significantly reducing pilot workload and allowing for this state-of-the-art helicopter to be piloted with ease.
To date, around 270 NH90 have been delivered to 13 countries and have logged nearly 100,000 flight hours, confirming the success of this helicopter on the export market.
