MOSCOW --- Russia has taken delivery of a newly modernized A-50 aircraft from Beriev Aircraft Company. The plane, modernized to the A-50U standard, is the fourth such upgraded aircraft delivered to the Air Force.
The A-50U -- a long-range radar detection aircraft -- flew to its permament base.
Russia is currently developing a new early warning aircraft, but in the meantime will continue to upgrade its current inventory of A-50s into the A-50U standard. The first aircraft reentered service in 2011, followed by two more in the next few years.
Through 2020, Russia aims to have all of its 11 remaining A-50s modernized into A-50Us.
