Airborne Troops to Receive 20 Modern UAVs by Late 2017

UAV units of the Airborne Troops will receive roughly 20 multi-role Orlan, Eleron and Tahion UAV complexes by the end of 2017.

The UAV systems are equipped with replaceable modules with modern infrared photo and video cameras on gyroscope-stabilized rotating platform and rebroadcasting equipment.

The UAVs are to be used during exercises in order to conduct air, optoelectronic, radio and radio-technical reconnaissance, and transmit target data to the means of fire and spotting means.

Besides, the application of new UAVs during various exercises including the international ones will provide photo- and video coverage at remote areas.

Modern UAVs are capable of operating in midair from 2 to 18 hours and accomplish tasks at the altitudes ranging from several dozens to several thousand meters.

UAVs are capable to move at a speed of 40 to 160 km/h, and transmit the data to the operator at a distance up to 60 km.

WMD Air Regiment to Receive 8 Ka-52 New Generation Attack Helicopters

Engineering staff of Western MD helicopter regiment has received eight Ka-52 helicopters.

Engineers will examine the received hardware, check performance capability of all systems, as well as technical manuals.

Later crews are to check performance capability of all systems, radioelectronic equipment and engine operation. The pilots will conduct control flight and transfer helicopters to their home station. The transferring will be conducted in two stages.

The Ka-52 is a new generation attack helicopter designed for destroying tanks, armored and light vehicles, troops and helicopters of the enemy both on front-line and in tactical depth in any environment and time of a day. The Ka-52 may provide reconnaissance, target distribution and designation to the command posts. The helicopter may provide fire cover to the assault landing.

Effectiveness of SMD Aviation and Air Defence Increased Threefold

Aviation and Air Defence units of the Southern Military District continue to be supplied with new and modernised armaments, military and special equipment.

Within the framework of developing troops, the SMD’s aviation and helicopter units and subunits in the period from 2012 to 2017 have received over 200 units of new and modernised aviation equipment, including Su-25SM, Su-27SM, Su-30SM, Su- 34 aircraft, Mi-8 AMTSh ‘Terminator’, Ka-52 ‘Alligator’, Mi-28N ‘Night Hunter’ helicopters and the world's largest Mi-26 transport helicopter.

In addition, the SMD’s anti-aircraft missile subunits are continuing to be rearmed with the latest anti-aircraft missile systems such as the S-400 ‘Triumph’, ‘Tor-M2’, ‘Buk-M2’, ‘Buk-M3’, S-300V4, as well as anti-aircraft missile-and-gun systems ‘Pantsir-S’.

So, earlier a regimental set of the S-400 ‘Triumph’ anti-aircraft missile system and a ‘Pantsir-S’ anti-aircraft missile-and-gun system entered on combat duty in the Crimea. Lately, an anti-aircraft missile regiment of the motorised rifle division deployed in the Rostov Region adopted the ‘Tor-M2’ AAMS.

In total, more than 100 units of the newest anti-aircraft missile systems have been received by the air defense subunits of the SMD.

In turn, the rearmament of this Military District’s Air Defence Forces and Aviation has increased their combat capabilities by 3 times as compared to 2012.

Until the end of 2020, it is planned to increase the share of modern samples of all types of land, sea and air armaments and military equipment in the SMD troops up to 70 % , and in some samples up to 100 %.
