Raytheon to Receive $100 Million French Order for Paveway Laser Guided Bomb Kits
France To Order Paveway Bomb Kits (Nov.17)
DUBAI, UAE--- France's Ministry of Defense recently issued a letter of order to Raytheon Company for an undisclosed number of Paveway II and Paveway III kits along with test equipment, spares and training support totaling approximately $100 million.
The Paveway II kits will be used to adapt MK-82 500 lb. and MK-83 1,000 lb. warheads to full-up Paveway II Laser Guided Bombs (LGBs). The Paveway III kits will be used to adapt BLU-109 penetrator warheads, MK-82 500 lb. and MK-84 2,000 lb. warheads to Paveway III LGBs.
The letter of order is expected to be formalized later this month. Contract deliveries will begin early next year pending U.S. government export approval and should be completed by October 2001.
The French Directorate for Cooperation and Industrial Affairs, Ministry of Defense (DGA), has awarded several contracts over the past five years for Paveway kits. Jerry Lockard, Raytheon vice president responsible for Missile Systems, said, "These awards are significant because they confirm that Paveway is doing its job to meet our customers needs.''
Deliveries of the newly ordered Paveway kits will take place for both the French Air Force and Navy. The equipment will be used on the Air Force's Mirage F1, Jaguar and Mirage 2000 as well as on the Navy's Super Etendard aircraft to be carried aboard France's new Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier.
The Paveway family of laser guided bombs is the world standard and was used by the French Air Force during the Bosnia crisis. It features an onboard guidance system to detect and guide the unit to a target illuminated by an external laser source. The Paveway samples the reflected laser energy from the target, corrects its trajectory as it glides, terminating at the target. Using a simple guidance technique, the detector optical axis is aerodynamically aligned with the flight path constantly sensing the position of the target relative to the bomb trajectory.
Paveway has been selected by the armed forces of 27 countries.
