Transfer of Frigate to the Belgian Navy

The Dutch frigate Hr. m Karel Doorman was transferred on Thursday to the Belgian Navy.

During a ceremony held at the Belgian Navy base at Zeebrugge, Queen Fabiola christened the ship "Léopold I".

The ceremony was attended by Dutch State Secretary of Defence Cees van der Knaap and Belgian national defence minister André Flahaut.

On 22 December 2005, the two countries signed the sale contract for two multipurpose frigates. The transfer of the second frigate, Hr.Ms. Willem van der Zaan, will follow in the in spring of 2008.

Revenue from the disposal of both frigates will finance future investments in the future role and missions of the Royal Netherlands Navy.

Belgium and the Netherlands will continue to cooperate closely in the future for the maintenance, support and upgrade of both M-class frigates.

Since it was first christened by Queen Beatrix in 1988, the Karel Doorman has sailed more than 500,000 miles at sea.
