'Lider' Destroyer Design Accepted by Russian Defense Ministry

The Russian Defense Ministry has approved the proposed new design for the country's new Lider-class destroyer, according to RIA Novosti.

RIA Novosti quoted Igor Ponomarev, Vice-President of Russia's United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC), as saying that the Russian Defense Ministry had endorsed its design for the sophisticated Lider (Leader)-class destroyer or Project 23560.

"The Defense Ministry recently adopted one of the stages of developing [this] prospective destroyer — a draft design," Ponomarev said on the sidelines of the 2017 International Maritime Defense Show.

"Terms for the beginning of the destroyer's construction will be defined at the stage of the ship's technical design. The USC shipyards have the appropriate technical capabilities to build vessels of this class," he added.

The Severnoye Design Bureau, the country's leading company for designing surface ships, has been refining its plans for the construction of the ocean-going Leader-class destroyer since 2010.

The 200-meter long and 20-meter wide vessel will displace up to 17,500 metric tons. It will travel at a maximum speed of 32 knots.

The multipurpose warship will have anti-aircraft, anti-ballistic missile, anti-surface and anti-submarine capabilities.

It is meant to replace the Sovremennyy-class destroyers, the main anti-surface warships of the Russian Navy, as well as the Slava-class cruisers and the Udaloy I class anti-submarine destroyers.

The Leader-class is expected to be outfitted with Kalibr-NK anti-ship, anti-submarine and land-attack missiles, as well as P-800 Oniks supersonic anti-ship cruise missiles with a range of more than 300 kilometers. Zircon hypersonic missiles could also be added to the mix.

The next-generation warship could also receive the sea-based version of Russia's most advanced air defense system, known as the S-500 Prometey or 55R6M Triumfator-M. It will also have a landing pad for two Kamov Ka-27 or Kamov Ka-32 helicopters.

The ship will most likely be nuclear powered. It will be capable of spending up to 90 days at sea without additional refueling or support.

Referring to the Lider-class destroyer, defense analyst Dave Majumdar wrote for the National Interest last year that "the massive new warships would outgun the largest surface combatants in the US Navy's fleet — carrying roughly double an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer's missile tubes.

"Moreover, the Leader-class' nuclear propulsion system would allow the enormous new warships the ability to sortie around the globe without the need for auxiliary refuelers or any requirement to make a port call," he concluded.

Russia’s Defense Ministry Approves Promising Missile Destroyer’s Preliminary Design

ST. PETERSBURG --- Russia’s Defense Ministry has approved the preliminary design of a new-generation missile destroyer, Vice-President for Warship Construction at Russia’s United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC) Igor Ponomaryov told TASS.

"The Defense Ministry has recently accepted one of the promising destroyer design stages. It has approved the ship’s preliminary design. The date when the construction of the ship begins will be set during the engineering development stage," Ponomaryov said.

According to him, USC subsidiaries have "all the potential to build such ships."

The Leader-class destroyer is being developed by the Severnoye Design Bureau in St. Petersburg in northwest Russia.

It was reported earlier that the ship would have a displacement ranging from 10,000 to 15,000 tons.

The future Project 23560 Leader-class destroyer is expected to replace the Project 956 and 1155 ships that make up the mainstay of the Navy’s general-purpose ocean-operating forces.

The Project 23560 destroyer will have a nuclear propulsion unit. The destroyer will be also armed with the Kalibr (NATO reporting name: SS-N-27 Sizzler) and Oniks (SS-N-26 Strobile) missile systems or their versions and a shipborne version of the S-500 air defense missile system able to ensure ballistic missile defense. -
