MCLEAN, Va. --- The ability to prototype ammunition and armament-related products, deliver them rapidly to the field and transition them to production is critical to meet the warfighter’s immediate field requirements.
As part of this effort, employee-owned Alion Science and Technology is one of the five primes that were awarded this five-year, $300 million indefinite-delivery indefinite-quantity (IDIQ) contract. This contract supports the U.S. Army’s Armament Research, Development and Engineering Center’s (ARDEC) Rapid Response, Rapid Prototype Technology Initiative (RPTI).
Under this contract, Alion will deliver expertise in four key areas, including processing, supply and fabrication of armament-related products; fabrication and/or refurbishment for armaments or related manufacturing equipment; prototyping and engineering services; and procurement of foreign ammunition and weapons.
“Today’s ever-changing threats on the battlefield, as well as the surges in response to shifting military environments, require ARDEC to provide working lethality and counter-lethality prototypes to its customers within weeks of receiving a requirement,” said Chris Amos, Alion Senior Vice President and Manager of the Technology Solutions Group. “As an accomplished integrator with the management experience, technical skills and history of rapid response to the warfighter, we can provide ARDEC with a comprehensive solution for rapid prototyping and system integration. This will enable ARDEC to provide enhanced responsiveness to the field while improving upon quality and reducing costs.”
ARDEC, which is located at Picatinny Arsenal, N.J., serves as the Army's principal researcher, developer and sustainer of current and future armament and munitions systems. ARDEC plays a key part in Army Transformation through its involvement in the development of the soldier and future weapon systems and through its continued efforts in the development of advanced weapons that exploit technologies like novel warheads, high-power microwaves, high-energy lasers and nano-technology. In support of the Global War on Terror, ARDEC’s mission focus is to provide expedited developmental solutions to meet the customer’s needs at various stages of a system's lifecycle.
Alion’s team of 15 world-class companies will provide comprehensive support to all aspects of the ARDEC RPTI. Alion will draw from its extensive experience integrating and managing the diverse technical expertise of large teams. Alion will also apply its expertise in hands-on design, engineering, prototyping and manufacturing to establish a fully integrated and highly responsive resource for rapid prototyping and system integration.
The period of performance runs July 2009 through July 2014.
