CAE Wins $75 Million Contract for Royal Navy Astute class submarines

MONTREAL --- CAE Electronics Group today announced it has been awarded a contract by Marconi Marine (VSEL) of Barrow-in-Furness, England to provide Controls and Instrumentation (C&I) for the Royal Navy's three new Astute class nuclear powered attack submarines with an option for two
additional submarines. The initial order for three boats is valued at approximately 30 million Pounds Sterling or $75 million Canadian.

The C&I system to be delivered provides the integrated control of steering, diving, depth control, and platform management of these new generation submarines. Employing digital controls technology, this system enables manpower reduction while reducing boat construction costs and providing enhanced operational effectiveness.

CAE Electronics Ltd. in St-Laurent, Quebec, Canada and CAE Electronics plc in Burgess Hill, Sussex will execute this contract in close cooperation with other UK companies. This contract follows several recent significant successes for CAE's Marine Division, which to date has supplied or been selected to supply advanced automation technology for over 90 warships in 11 navies of the world.

"We are delighted Marconi Marine (VSEL) selected CAE as Controls & Instrumentation Integrator for the RN's Astute class submarines. This is CAE's first submarine controls contract and reinforces CAE's technological leadership position in the marine control systems business,'' said Rashid Khan, Vice President and General Manager, Marine Systems.

CAE Inc., with headquarters in Toronto, Canada, and facilities throughout Canada, the United States, Europe, Asia and Australia, is an advanced technology company serving several very specific markets.
