Aussie MoD To Improve Marksmanship (July 15)

Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Defence Fran Bailey welcomed the news that Defence had contracted ADI Limited to continue the nation-wide upgrade of Marksmanship Training Ranges (MTRs).

The new ranges would provide the Australian Defence Force with the best-possible training by international standards, the Parliamentary Secretary said.

"Most importantly regional employment is assured," said Fran Bailey

"These new systems are Australian designed, manufactured and installed and are provided by ADI Live Fire Target Systems from Albury, NSW.

Three ranges will be upgraded this year Townsville in Queensland, Kapooka in NSW and Buckland in Tasmania. This follows improvements already made to Majura in the ACT, Singleton in NSW, and Greenbank and Purga in Queensland.

"MTRs are used to practice, assess and validate basic shooting skills for military personnel and are where most of Defence small-arms weapons live firing is done," Fran Bailey said.

"Changing requirements, such as shooting with night-vision equipment, and the poor reliability of old target equipment highlighted the need for new systems."
