PAOLI, Pa. --- Ametek Aerospace has been selected to provide a suite of eight engine sensors to Hamilton Sundstrand for the jet engine that will power Lockheed Martin's F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF).
The suite, which will be used on the F135 engine specifically designed for all Joint Strike Fighter variants, includes engine sensors to measure vibration, temperature, pressure, speed, oil level and engine light off. The value to AMETEK is expected to exceed $80 million over the life of the program.
"Ametek is extremely pleased to participate in the design and development of this exciting new aircraft, which is expected to serve as the cornerstone of the defense capability of the United States and its allies well into the 21st Century," comments Frank S. Hermance, Ametek Chairman and Chief Executive Officer.
Lockheed Martin will initially develop 22 aircraft for the System Development and Demonstration phase of the program that will be concentrated over the next three years. Lockheed Martin expects the first test aircraft to fly in 2005 and to deliver the first operational JSF in 2008. Plans call for more than 3,000 aircraft for the U.S. Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps as well as Royal Navy and Air Force. International sales may account for an additional 3,000 aircraft over the life of the program.
