British Aerospace Selects Norwegian Company as Supplier for Eurofighter

;British Aerospace has signed a contract initially valued at around £600,000 with Norwegian company Kongsberg Protech for the supply of parts for the Eurofighter combat aircraft. It is anticipated that follow-on orders could lead to the award of further contracts worth over £1 million.

Kongsberg Protech will manufacture titanium and aluminium Nose Landing Gear Door details for the world's most advanced multi-role combat aircraft. Deliveries to British Aerospace in the UK have already commenced.

Egil Haugsdal, President of Kongsberg Protech, is proud that his Company has been chosen for the Eurofighter commenting: "There is a great deal of potential in the Eurofighter project. Even though this is not a major contract for Kongsberg Protech, it is nevertheless an important one for us."

Commenting on Kongsberg Protech's performance, Ross Bradley, British Aerospace Eurofighter Project Director said: "We are very satisfied with the parts manufactured by Kongsberg Protech, and this contract reinforces our intention to make the Kongsberg Group of companies our strategic partners in Norway. On a major programme like Eurofighter, we are reliant on partners that can deliver components at the agreed time and right price, as well as of the correct quality. Kongsberg Protech has proven its ability to do this."

Eurofighter is in competition with the F-16 to become Norway's new fighter in the 21st century. Norway has been offered partnership in the Eurofighter programme, with the four Eurofighter partners talking with more than 150 Norwegian companies regarding the possibility of work in the event Norway selects Eurofighter.

Eurofighter is manufactured by British Aerospace, DaimlerChrysler Aerospace (Germany), Alenia Aerospazio (Italy) and CASA (Spain). Serial production has been initiated for the delivery of the first 620 aircraft to the four partner nations in 2002.

(Kongsberg announced the same agreement with BAe on Oct.21 but, on Oct. 28, the Pentagon notified Congress that Norway had "requested a possible purchase of 30 F-16 Block 60 or Block 50+ aircraft" and related equipment valued at $2.6 billion. This raises some doubts about the status of Norway's fighter procurement plans--Editor)
