Department of National Defence Concludes a Memorandum of Understanding with Romania

OTTAWA The Honourable Art Eggleton, Minister of National Defence, today announced that his Department and the Romanian Minister of National Defence, Dr. Victor Babiuc, have signed a Defence Materiel Co-operation Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). This MOU aims at identifying areas of activities where it would be to the mutual advantage of both countries to cooperate.

Procurement processes, supply chain, rationalization of equipment and future equipment procurements are all potential subjects that could be included in future talks under this MOU.

"We believe that opportunities for co-operation in the Materiel field will develop and improve as Romania draws closer and aligns its procurement and logistics processes with those of NATO countries," said Minister Eggleton.

Earlier this year, the Assistant Deputy Minister (Materiel) hosted the Romanian Secretary of State and Chief of Procurement Department, Major-General Zaharia, for a visit to explore potential industrial/materiel co-operation. This was the first bilateral contact between the two countries in the defence materiel field.

"As Romania develops contacts and builds bridges with NATO countries, there is potential for co-operation in the medium and long term," added Minister Eggleton. "Romania faces considerable challenges in its efforts to align its procurement and logistics procedures with those of NATO countries. Canada will do what it can to facilitate this process."
