Australian Hawk Package Worth 150 million pounds to Rolls-Royce
Rolls-Royce plc, the civil aerospace, defence and energy group, has signed a contract worth £150 million with British Aerospace for the through-life support of Rolls-Royce Turbomeca Adour Mk 871 engines that will power Australia's Lead-in Fighter Hawk aircraft, it was announced Feb. 16 at the Australian International Air Show at Avalon.
The contract covers the engines and support package for the 33 aircraft being acquired by the Royal Australian Air Force.
Rolls-Royce will manufacture the first batch of Adour engines at its Bristol facility in the United Kingdom. The first engine for this programme is due to be delivered next month to British Aerospace at Warton for installation into the first Australian Hawk. Qantas will assemble and test the remaining engines from UK-supplied kits at its newly-equipped Sydney Airport workshops.
Sue Lyons, Managing Director - Defence (Europe) for Rolls-Royce said today: " Australia's choice of the Adour-powered Hawk underscores the acknowledged reliability and pedigree of this proven combination, which is being used in 14 countries around the world. We are also delighted to have Qantas playing an integral role in assembling Adour engines, which further strengthens our partnership with Australia."
As a part of the Adour engine assembly and testing in Australia, Qantas last month received two Adour engines which are being used for cross-calibration testing at its test facility near Sydney. Successful completion of the testing will lead to commissioning of the facility, scheduled for next month.
Spare parts needed for repair and overhaul of the engines will be provisioned by Rolls-Royce. Repair and overhaul responsibilities will be undertaken by Qantas after the first production aircraft is in flight, scheduled for mid-2000.
