Vickers Awarded Contract for Future Engineer Tank

Vickers Defence Systems announces that it has received a contract to carry out a feasibility study for the Future Engineer Tank (FET). FET is the next generation vehicle for the Royal Engineers to replace the obsolete Chieftain based vehicles. 102 systems are required, half of which will carry the Vickers BR90 tactical bridge.

The design study represents 12 months of design and development work where a number of different options to satisfy the British Army requirement will be researched.

Vickers experience of systems integration gained through the Challenger 2 programme will ensure that the options proposed by the company will be of the same exacting standard and reliability as the extremely successful Challenger 2.

Background Notes :

The MoD has awarded a design contract for the £90m TRACER programme. Vickers is a major partner in the British Aerospace and Lockheed Martin consortium, SIKA.

Future prospects include a potential £5 billion worth of export orders for Challenger 2E and opportunities for BR90 in Austria, Switzerland and Italy.

Vickers products include the new British Army main battle tank, Challenger 2; the Challenger 2E main battle tank for export markets; the BR90 tactical modular bridging system and a comprehensive range of training aids and simulators. Vickers is a member of the Crusader consortium, the Alvis and Hunting Engineering Ltd, which is expected to receive substantial contracts for the integration of the Bowman communication system into the armoured vehicle fleet.

Vickers Defence Systems is part of the Vickers group of companies. Vickers plc is a UK based international engineering company with products which command global leadership in specialist markets with growth potential. The Groups principal activities are land defence systems and equipment, marine propulsion systems and motion control equipment, superalloys and components for the gas turbine and automotive industries.
