MINNEAPOLIS --- ATK (Alliant Techsystems), the nation's largest manufacturer of ammunition, has been awarded a one-year contract worth $186 million to produce approximately 500 million rounds of small-caliber ammunition at the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant in Independence, Mo. The award from the U.S. Army Joint Munitions Command, Rock Island, Ill., is the fifth annual procurement under a ten-year basic production contract.
The value of the contract is expected to increase over the next several months as ATK receives additional orders to meet Department of Defense small- caliber ammunition training and war reserve requirements for government fiscal year 2003.
ATK Lake City Small Caliber Ammunition, which manages the Lake City plant for the Army, will produce the rounds. The company is the leading supplier of small-caliber training and tactical ammunition to the Department of Defense, producing 5.56mm, 7.62mm,.30 caliber,.50 caliber, and 20mm cartridges.
Production at the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant remains at its highest level in 15 years following an order from the U.S. Army last year for increased quantities of training ammunition.
ATK also produces.22 and.45 caliber military ammunition at its Federal Cartridge production plant in Anoka, Minn.
ATK Lake City Small Caliber Ammunition is one of three operating units within ATK's Ammunition and Related Products Group, which produces more than 1 billion rounds of small-caliber and medium-caliber military ammunition annually.
