Lucas Aerospace's Eurofighter Contracts Now Top $640 Million

;LONDON --- LucasVarity plc today announced that Lucas Aerospace has been awarded five contracts to provide a broad range of engine controls for the EUROJET EJ200 engine that powers the Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft. The revenue value of these contracts, including aftermarket sales, is expected to be at least $480 million (300 million pounds sterling). With around $160 million (100 million pounds) of airframe business already secured, these latest contracts bring the total value of the Eurofighter program for Lucas Aerospace to more than $640 million (400 million pounds).
;Lucas Aerospace will serve as the prime contractor in three of the deals, providing the afterburner fuel control unit and main engine fuel pump to the UK's Rolls-Royce plc and the main fuel metering unit to Industria de Turbo Propulsores (ITP) of Spain. For the other two contracts, Lucas Aerospace will supply digital electronic control unit modules to prime-contractor MTU Muenchen of Germany and nozzle actuators to Microtecnica of Italy.
;"The Eurofighter Typhoon is a key program for Europe's future military readiness,'' said Ken Maciver, Lucas Aerospace President. "As a multi-role aircraft expected to serve the needs of several air forces around the world, the demand for the aircraft is expected to be high. Lucas Aerospace is proud to contribute to this major program, which reinforces the Company's position as the world's leading independent engine controls supplier.''
;The Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft, produced collaboratively by Germany (DaimlerChrysler), Italy (Alenia Aerospazio), Spain (CASA) and the United Kingdom (British Aerospace), will replace retiring aircraft in the air forces of these four nations. The Eurofighter was selected by all four nations as the most affordable aircraft capable of meeting each country's air defense and multi-role requirements against all alternatives including F-22, Rafale, and enhanced versions of the F-15, F-16, F-18, Mig 29 and SU 27. Initially, the Eurofighter partner nations will take delivery of 620 aircraft: 180 for Germany, 121 for Italy, 87 for Spain and 232 for the United Kingdom. Approximately 1,560 EJ200 engines will be produced for these aircraft. The program is already being actively considered for several other air forces around the world and is expected to take a substantial share of the global combat aircraft market over the next 25 years.
;The first prototype successfully completed its maiden flight in March 1994. Today, all seven Eurofighter prototypes are participating in intensive flight test programs in all four partner countries to prove that the aircraft is ready to go into production.
;EUROJET was formed in 1986 for the sole purpose of developing the EJ200 engine for the Eurofighter program and comprises Rolls-Royce of Great Britain, Germany's MTU, FiatAvio of Italy and Spain's ITP.
;Lucas Aerospace provides the global aerospace industry with high integrity systems and equipment in cargo handling, engine controls, flight controls, missile systems, hoists and winches, and power generation and management, all backed by a worldwide customer support organization.
;LucasVarity designs, manufactures and supplies advanced technology systems, products and services in the world's automotive and aerospace industries.
