Another major contract award for Thomson-CSF: Egypt becomes 24th country to adopt PR4G military radio system
October 13, 1998
Following a fierce international competition, Egypt's defense ministry has awarded Thomson-CSF a major contract to replace the Egyptian Army's installed base of VHF tactical communications systems.
The contract, worth several hundred million francs, involves supplying close to 3,000 PR4G radios, in manpack and vehicular versions, and is the first phase in a program designed to meet an estimated overall requirement of some 15,000 radio sets for the Egyptian Army.
A major technology transfer program is to be implemented. This program will draw on the experience gained by Thomson-CSF Communications through previous transfers of PR4G manufacturing technology in the Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, Poland, and now Greece. The Benha military facility near Cairo will benefit directly from the technology transfer, which is the first of its kind for the PR4G in a Middle Eastern country.
The fourth-generation PR4G is currently the most advanced system in operation and provides a comprehensive response to all tactical VHF communications needs. It is a complete family of equipment ranging from handheld to airborne radios that are totally interoperable with manpack and vehicular stations in all ECCM modes,. and offers multi-role capabilities as a combat net radio, a mobile transmission medium for weapon systems, and an access point to tactical area networks and packet radio networks. With outstanding performance and intrinsic growth potential, the PR4G system is designed to meet all current and future communications requirements on the digital battlefield. More than 70,000 PR4G radio units have been ordered to date. The PR4G has been selected by 24 countries, including 12 European nations and 8 NATO countries.
Thomson-CSF Communications is the leading European player in the military communication systems market. The company designs and produces equipment and systems to provide the specialized communications required by land, air and naval forces both at home and in remote theaters of operations. In 1997, Thomson-CSF Communications generated revenues of FF 5.3 billion with 5,700 employees worldwide.
