;The Australian Minister for Defence, John Moore, announced that the Agusta A129 Scorpion is one of the three shorlisted contenders for the Army reconnaissance armed helicopter AIR 87 programme. ;The Scorpion in the latest variant of the successful A129 Mangusta, which has been in service with the Italian Army in 45 out of 60 units. The Scorpion is a single main rotor, twin engine, tandem seat scout-attack helicopter. It is designed as manned aerial weapon system, providing maximum operational flexibility with multi-mission capability. ;The Scorpion, featuring the latest technology, combines exceptional battlefield performance with proven in-service mission equipment. A comprehensive integrated logistic support package ensures that the aircraft will be effectively supported throughout its service life. Based on the successful A129 Mangusta, the name Scorpion was accurately portrays this helicopter's potent sting for its compact size. ;The Scorpion will be an Australian aircraft. In addition to assembly the helicopter and its related systems, Australian industry will be given the opportunity to participate in the development, maintenance and through life support of the Scorpion fleet.
