HMS VENGEANCE successfully launched an unarmed Trident II (D5) ballistic missile at 2150 (BST) yesterday (21 Sept).
The fourth of the Royal Navy's Trident submarines, HMS VENGEANCE is under the command of Commander Steve Upright and conducted the firing as part of her Demonstration And Shakedown Operation (DASO) on the United States Eastern Test Range, off the coast of Florida.
Minister for Defence Procurement, Baroness Symons, who was present at the test firing said:
"I have been privileged to witness the successful conclusion to HMS VENGEANCE's DASO. The firing is a tribute to the hard work and dedication of all those involved together with the invaluable support offered by the families of the ship's company."
The purpose of the DASO is to demonstrate that the submarine's crew meets the very stringent safety requirements for handling, maintaining and operating the strategic weapons system. The DASO also confirms that the submarine is able to launch and target a missile correctly.
This is the first DASO launch of the Trident D5 missile by HMS VENGEANCE, and follows successful launches by each of the other 3 submarines in the Class since 1994.
