Commission clears joint venture between Snecma and Sabena
;The European Commission has authorised the creation of a full-function joint venture by Société Nationale d'Etude et de Construction de Moteurs d'Aviation ("Snecma") and Sabena. The new company, Snecma Sabena Engine Services, ("SSES"), will be active in the repair and overhaul of large commercial aero engines. The Commission concludes that creating SSES will not create or strengthen a dominant position on any relevant product or geographic market. Snecma is a French national company, controlled by the French State, active in the production and the repair and overhaul of aero engines and mechanical equipment. Sabena is a Belgian airline, jointly controlled by the Belgian State and Swissair. In addition to its airline activities, Sabena repairs and overhauls large commercial aero engines through its division Sabena Technics. The parent companies will jointly control the joint venture and each own 50% of its shares. SSES will repair and overhaul large commercial aero engines, and will be transferred all the activities and resources held by Sabena Technics in that sector. SSES, Snecma and Swissair (which participates in the joint control of Sabena) are active in the repair and overhaul of large commercial engines. Furthermore, Snecma is active on the upstream sector related to the manufacture of aero engines, and Sabena and Swissair are active on the downstream sector of air transport. However, in view of the market positions of the parties, of the existence of some important competitors of the strong countervailing power of the clients (the airlines), the Commission has concluded that the concentration would not cause any serious concern for competition.
