Alvis Unveils Shadow Light Armored Vehicle (Nov. 3)

The new Alvis Shadow Offensive Action Vehicle may be seen for the very first time in the USA at the AM General stand, number 3110, at AUSA, Washington, from 16 - 18 October 2000.

Shadow is an exciting new product: a hybrid based on the classic Hummer M1113 Extended Capability Vehicle, adapted and modified by Alvis Vehicles Ltd, UK, in response to the next generation requirements for a rapid response vehicle, for use by special forces. The specification was very tough: not only did two vehicles have to fit inside a CH47 Chinook helicopter, but strength, all-terrain endurance, reliability and ease of maintenance were critical for mission success.

Alvis embarked on the project by shortening and narrowing the original chassis, with the result that not only can two Shadows fit neatly inside a CH47, but three will go inside a C-130 Hercules transport aircraft. Next, Alvis built a rugged, stainless steel roll cage with integral ring mount. Redesigned, demountable seats were added and the tailgate, also demountable, may be used a stretcher or a workbench. To facilitate extended operations in the field, many lashing points for equipment stowage were also incorporated into the vehicle.

The 6.5 litre engine provides more than enough power for this 4800 kg vehicle, even with a full 1200 kg payload. Automatic transmission through a GM Hydramatic (4 speed with torque converter) plus AM General double wishbone suspension, make Shadow an easy drive, minimising driver fatigue, even at the end of a long day on tough terrain. Range and weapon fit can be tailored to suit individual end-user requirements.

After rigorous trials and testing in the UK, you can be sure that Shadow is ready, willing and able to be rapidly inserted into special operations anywhere in the world.
