Bombardier Delivers To China, Attends Show (Nov. 7)

Bombardier Aerospace, the leading manufacturer of regional aircraft worldwide, will display two aircraft of its family of airliners at China Air Show from November 5 to 12, 2000. The show is being held at Zhuhai Airport in Guandong Province, People's Republic of China.

A 50-seat CRJ200 -- the aircraft that launched the regional jet revolution in 1992 -- and a 68- to 78-seat, 350-knot Q400 turboprop -- the world's fastest turboprop airliner -- will be on static display. The two aircraft will also be conducting demonstration flights for Chinese customers, government authorities and executives and media during the show.

The CRJ200 will be in the colors of Shandong Airlines based in Ji'nan in eastern China. Shandong Airlines has placed firm orders for five CRJ200 Series aircraft, the first CRJs for commercial airline service in The People's Republic of China. The aircraft was delivered to Shandong Airlines in Montreal just prior to the show. The airline has also signed a letter of agreement, subject to Chinese government approval, for 10 70-seat CRJ700 Series jets, the first for the Asia/Pacific region.

Changan Airlines of Xian, Shaanxi Province, has placed firm orders for three 78-seat Q400 airliners to replace older turboprops. Changan Airlines recently merged with Hainan Airlines and the combined airline is now known as Changan Airlines Limited.

Other Bombardier Aerospace customers in The People's Republic of China are Zhejiang Airlines (three 50- 56-seat Dash 8 Series 300 turboprops), Shanghai Airlines (three CRJ200 Series) and China Yunnan Airlines (letter of agreement for six CRJ200 Series aircraft).

"Regional aircraft supplied by Bombardier Aerospace are playing a vital role in building the air transportation infrastructure in The People's Republic of China and thereby contributing to economic development from which all of the country's citizens will benefit," said Steven A. Ridolfi, president of Bombardier Aerospace, Regional Aircraft. "Our advanced technology Q400 airliner offers exceptional performance which is well-suited to the challenging conditions at airports in central and western China," he added.

The Bombardier Aerospace, Regional Aircraft exhibit will occupy a 54-square-meter (580 sq.-ft. ) area at Stand 17 in Hall 1A. Leading the Bombardier delegation will be Walter Galloway, vice-president, sales, Asia/Pacific and David Penhorwood, vice-president, business development. The display will highlight the Bombardier Aerospace regional jet and turboprop families of regional aircraft: the CRJ Series, the 50-seat CRJ200, 70-seat CRJ700 and the recently launched 86-seat CRJ900, and the Q Series, the 37- to 39-seat Q100 and Q200, 50- to 56-seat Q300 and 68- to 78-seat Q400.

For more than 20 years, Bombardier Aerospace and The People's Republic of China have maintained a close relationship, building business and organizational ties between Canada and China. In recent years, Bombardier has received orders for a total of 35 regional airliners from six air carriers plus 15 Bombardier Corporate Airliners, Challengers and Learjet aircraft for VIP transport. In addition, 10 DHC-6 Twin Otter utility aircraft are in service within the country.

Bombardier was the first western aerospace manufacturer to involve a Chinese company in the production of aircraft components. Xian Aircraft has been producing sub assemblies for Bombardier's Canadair 215/415 amphibious water-bombers - including ailerons, escape hatches and float pylons - since 1980. Shenyang Aircraft Company has produced a series of baggage compartment doors for the Q Series Dash 8 turboprop airliners since 1986 - a relationship rejuvenated with a new contract in 1997. (ends)
