BAe Australia Signs $50 million Parakeet Phase 6 Contract

British Aerospace Australia signed a $50m contract with the Department of Defence today for Phase 6 of Project PARAKEET the Australian Army's tactical trunk communications system.
Under PARAKEET Phase 6, BAe Australia will provide switching equipment for Australian Defence Force units not previously equipped, upgrade the Parakeet Satellite Trunk System and evaluate new capabilities in wireless telephony and Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) switching.
BAe Australia Chief Executive Peter Anstiss said, "The Company is pleased to have the opportunity to continue its long-standing association with the Australian Army in tactical communications.
"The new Phase 6 contract will provide BAe Australia with significant engineering and manufacturing work, utilising the Company's expanding C3I capabilities," said Mr Anstiss.
"BAe Australia is moving rapidly into the area of information management and growing its skills in emerging information technologies to apply on future defence programs," he said.
Phase 6 will enable BAe Australia to maximise the benefits of long-standing partnerships with local and overseas subcontractors. It will also offer the opportunity to create strategic relationships with new suppliers for unique Phase 6 elements.
"BAe Australia has learnt a lot from our earlier PARAKEET work and will incorporate this experience in the new program to ensure that we meet or exceed our customer's expectations.
"We are looking forward to further enhancing the capability of the PARAKEET system and introducing new technologies so that Australia's battlefield communications systems can support the Army's critical and growing need for real-time information."
