Australia Picks Textron For Ninox Component (Dec. 22)

The Department of Defence today announced Textron Systems Corporation (USA) as the preferred tenderer for a $35 million proposal for the supply of state-of-the-art land based sensor systems.

As part of Project NINOX, which has already delivered the night vision systems so successful in East Timor, the Unattended Ground Sensors (UGS) element will complement and extend current tactical land surveillance capabilities.

The UGS system is a key element in building a world-class ground based surveillance capability for Australia's future.

The systems are designed to be deployed at points of interest such as isolated airfields and beach-landing areas.

They will be able to locate and identify personnel, wheel and track vehicles, watercraft and fixed and rotary winged aircraft on landing strips.

Each system will be able to monitor up to ten surveillance sites and will be capable of relaying target information to a monitoring facility located hundreds or even thousands of kilometres away. Once deployed, they will also provide continuous surveillance for a minimum of 30 days without the need for maintenance.

The UGS systems are based on a proven technology, integrated into this new approach by Textron Systems Corporation (USA).
