ARC To Develop Solid Fuel Ramjet (Jan. 24)



GAINESVILLE, Va.---Atlantic Research Corporation (ARC), a unit of Sequa Corporation, has been selected to develop a solid fuel ramjet engine for Lockheed Martin and the US Navy.

This contract is an important part of an effort to develop affordable hypersonic missiles for future military applications.

Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control - Dallas is the prime contractor for the Solid Fuel Ramjet Missile Technology Program sponsored by the Naval Air Warfare Center, Weapons Division, China Lake, California. This 18-month program will develop a ramjet propulsion system using an airbreathing solid fuel ramjet combined with carbon-carbon structural components. ARC will be responsible for the ramjet engine design and ground testing.

The Solid Fuel Ramjet (SFRJ) engine offers the most efficient fuel packaging of all airbreathing engine options, thereby enabling high speeds and long ranges to be achieved within the envelope of a tactical missile system. Additionally, since the SFRJ fuel grain contains no oxidizer it is consistent with the Military services' Insensitive Munitions requirements.

ARC is a leading developer and producer of air breathing engines, solid propellant rocket motors, gas generators, advanced composite materials and liquid and electric propulsion systems for satellite station keeping out in space. ARC also produces automotive air bag inflators and supplies energetic components for the air bags from its high capacity propulsion plant in Camden, Arkansas.

Sequa Corporation is a diversified industrial company whose other principal interests include the manufacture and repair of jet engine components, the coating of coiled steel and aluminum, and the production of specialty chemicals, can machinery, auxiliary press equipment, automotive products, and men's formal wear.
