ADI, Forgac Team for Aussie Ship Tender (Sept. 21)

Australia’s leading defense contractor, Sydney based ADI Limited has teamed with Newcastle based Forgacs to bid for the Department of Defence’s amphibious ship and oil tanker conversion projects.

ADI will lead the team as prime contractor of the two projects and will work closely with Forgacs to utilize its skills and expertise.

The ADI and Forgacs team brings together extensive existing naval facilities and capabilities in Sydney, Newcastle and Brisbane. These facilities include the Captain Cook Dry Dock in Sydney, the Forgacs floating Dry Dock in Newcastle and the Cairncross Dry Dock in Brisbane. In addition, the team has at its disposal a comprehensive and highly skilled engineering and design team.

The $2 billion amphibious ship program is the largest of the two projects the ADI/Forgacs team will be competing for. Whilst the number and size of the amphibious ships is dependent on the incoming Federal Government, the basis of the team’s proposal will see the majority of the work shared between the team’s facilities in NSW and Queensland.

The amphibious project involves the construction of the largest warships ever built in Australia. The size of the ADI/Forgacs team will expand to meet the challenges of this ambitious project by absorbing within the team the necessary complimentary expertise and increased numbers of professional staff.

The team is now working on its response to the request for tender for the proposed conversion of the Delos, an existing commercial oil tanker of 37000 tons to replace HMAS WESTRALIA. If successful, all production work associated with this project will be conducted in Newcastle.

Success for the ADI/Forgacs team in these major upgrade and shipbuilding projects will provide maximum benefit to NSW and Queensland with significant job and subcontractor opportunities for a large number of small to medium size businesses.

Competition between the two companies for repair and maintenance work on the existing Royal Australian Navy fleet will not be impacted upon by this teaming arrangement.
