Alenia Marconi Systems' Integrated Systems Division has been awarded two major contracts for their new Electronic Warfare classroom trainer.
The first of the contracts is for the supply of the sophisticated naval trainer to the Netherlands Ministry of Defence. This system, known as the Universal EW Trainer (UNET), will be located at the Dutch-Belgian Operational School at Den Helder. UNET will provide integrated facilities for the preparation, delivery and assessment of primary and secondary EW training for EW Operators and Controllers.
Initial UNET training is provided using Computer Based Training (CBT) and allows students to undertake self paced learning of EW Theory and Practice. The CBT facility incorporates a Student Management System, which monitors and records student responses. It also provides full debriefing on an individual basis.
Advanced training takes the form of scenario driven tactical exercises, where EW Operator and Controller teams are presented with situations of varying complexities through configurable audio-visual simulations of EW and communications equipment. The training can take place in individual, collective or adversarial exercises for up to eight two-man teams. The exercises are designed to sharpen individual skills and tactical decision making and also to improve communication and teamwork.
The UNET Instructor Stations are manned by an Instructor and an Assistant, who together control the scenarios and assess the trainees. They are supported by comprehensive lesson preparation, briefing and debriefing facilities.
A second contract was signed within days for the supply of an EW trainer to a second Navy. This will build on the UNET solution but will be reconfigured to meet the second Customer's specific requirements.
Mike Perowne, Managing Director of Alenia Marconi's Integrated Systems Division commented "These sales indicates the importance of Electronic Warfare to modern Navies and how essential it is that comprehensive training is undertaken. Alenia Marconi is right at the forefront of this key training technology."
The sophisticated classroom is based on Commercial off the Shelf (COTS) networked PCs running Microsoft Windows operating systems. Both trainers will be produced at the Integrated Systems Division's Donibristle site in Fife, near Edinburgh.
Alenia Marconi Systems is an equal shares joint venture company between BAE Systems of the UK and Finmeccanica of Italy
