AMS to Upgrade Royal Navy Minehunters (Jan. 10)

AMS has been awarded a contract for £8m to update the NAUTIS combat management system for the Royal Navy’s Sandown Class Minehunters.

The vessels’ existing Nautis system will be updated to NAUTIS 3, the most up-to-date MCMV command and control system which is currently being fitted to the Royal Navy’s Hunt Class as part of their mid-life update programme. This commonality will result in cost-savings in support and training through the life of the system.

The contract also includes enhancements to the NAUTIS 3 systems for both the Hunt and Sandown classes to add the foundations for Network Enabled Capability in the Royal Navy’s MCM Fleet.

NAUTIS 3 is based on commercial-off-the-shelf hardware, operating systems and associated programme software. At the heart of the system is AMS NAUTIS 3 MCM software, which is rich in functionality developed over a number of years to support the Royal Navy’s mine warfare teams in the planning and conduct of MCM missions including navigation, mine detection and classification, remote mine disposal and ship manoeuvre control. The modularity and open architecture of Nautis 3 allows for the easy incorporation of third party applications, such as additional military layers on charts.

NAUTIS systems are in daily use on minehunters across the world, with systems having been supplied to Australia, Saudi Arabia, New Zealand, Spain, Japan, the United States and Turkey. This strong export base has created a modern, effective and cost-efficient system, the benefits of which are now being realised by the Royal Navy.
