AMS Forms Abu-Dhabi Joint Venture Co. (Feb. 23)

Abu Dhabi Ship Building PJSC and Alenia Marconi Systems SpA, a Finmeccanica company, today announced plans for a Joint Venture in the field of integrated defence systems. The new company, to be called Abu Dhabi Systems Integration (or ADSI) will initially be aimed at providing a broad range of defence systems, products and services for naval platforms.

ADSI will be located in Abu Dhabi, UAE and will offer state-of-the-art defence system integration capabilities along with a full spectrum of related services including program management, systems upgrades, equipment maintenance, customer training and logistics support.

This will be the first joint venture of its kind in the Arabian Gulf and will result in the first company in the area to provide world-class defence system integration capabilities. Regional military customers will, for the first time, have a local alternative to the traditional defence system integrators from Europe or North America.

By combining a strong local presence with the most sophisticated sensor and software technology, the Joint Venture partners intend to provide the latest in naval defence system capabilities, while delivering highly competitive pricing and superior service. In addition, ADSI will also provide significant career opportunities for young UAE engineers in this exciting area of defence electronics.

Abu Dhabi Ship Building and Alenia Marconi Systems are already working together to formally establish the new company and ADSI is expected to begin operations before mid-year 2005. Once established, the new company will immediately begin defence systems related work on the previously announced BAYNUNAH Program, in which Abu Dhabi Ship Building is prime contractor to build four 70-meter UAE Navy Corvettes (with an option for two additional vessels). Alenia Marconi Systems is the Combat System Integrator and Combat Management System supplier for BAYNUNAH.

Abu Dhabi Ship Building, a UAE Public Joint Stock Company, was established in 1996 and operates the most modern shipyard in the Arabian Gulf. Abu Dhabi Ship Building is the only shipyard in the region with the capability to build, repair and upgrade complex naval warships.

Abu Dhabi Ship Building’s unique capabilities further include the installation and upgrading of today’s sophisticated naval combat systems and associated equipment. The Company is successfully providing products and related services to Navies throughout the GCC, (Gulf Cooperation Council) countries.
