$430 Mn Defence Spending In N. Territory (July 25)

Close to $430 million will be spent on Defence facilities projects in the Northern Territory, Dr Brendan Nelson, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Defence announced today while officially opening the Defence + Industry 2001 Darwin Briefing 2001 at the MGM Grand Casino, Darwin.

The Briefing will aim to inform industry of Defence's capability objectives and business opportunities, and provide information on procurement reforms and how to do business with Defence.

"This is an important opportunity for local industry and small businesses to be kept informed and retain a capability edge," Dr Nelson said

"We are working to improve the Defence and industry relationship with three peak industry associations invited to join the Defence and Industry Council,"

"These are the Australian Industry Defence Network, The Australian Industry Group and Australian Business Limited,"

"This is a positive commitment to facilitate improved communication between Defence and industry in the Northern Territory,"

"There are over 5000 ADF and Defence Department personnel based in the Northern Territory which adds up to $215 million in annual salaries, along with billions of dollars worth of investment in facilities and equipment already made,"

"It is evident that the Territory will continue to benefit from the Howard Government's expenditure on Defence in the long term." Dr Nelson said

Other Industry Briefings will be held around Australia in the next few weeks
