BAE Systems To Provide Servicers At Woomera (Aug 3)

Defence has selected BAE Systems Australia Limited (BAE Systems), as the preferred tenderer to provide a comprehensive range of support services to Defence operations at Woomera.

The functions to be provided comprise the following:
Facilities Services
Transport and Storage Services
Grounds Maintenance and Animal/Pest Control Services
Security Services
General Administration Services
Information Technology Services
Cleaning and Waste Management Services
Emergency Services
Commercial Operations

The contract allows BAE Systems to market the use of the Woomera Prohibited Area, with expected benefits for the region.

Given the unique nature and role of Defence at Woomera, the market testing activity covered provision of infrastructure and corporate services functions in the Woomera area.

Defence and BAE Systems will negotiate a ten-year term for provision of the services, with an expected cost of around $65m. This will result in a reduction in the overall cost of providing the services by some $7m. Operations will be phased in from October 2001.

It is expected that a number of the staff currently employed to provide the services will be employed by BAE Systems.

BAE Systems was selected from two tenderers that responded to a Request for Quotation issued on 03 March 2000.
