ATK to Develop Omproved 20mm Rounds (Aug 16)

MINNEAPOLIS --- Alliant Techsystems has received a $10 million contract from the U.S. Navy Naval Surface Warfare Center to supply 20mm Mk244 Enhanced Lethality Cartridges (ELC) to Block 1B upgraded Phalanx systems. With options, the contract has a potential total value of $23 million. The U.S. Navy uses the Phalanx close-in weapon system to defend the fleet against enemy missile attacks.

This is the first application for ATK's newest 20mm round, which provides more stopping power than any 20mm round the company has ever produced.

The Phalanx contract expands ATK's portfolio of 20mm medium-caliber ammunition solutions. The round uses a heavier tungsten core capable of putting more kinetic energy on target. With more energy on target, the Phalanx system is better equipped to handle high-speed missiles and other threats to the fleet.

ATK supplies a complete family of medium-caliber training and tactical ammunition that meets today's requirements and serves as the cornerstone for tomorrow's Future Combat Systems. In addition to the Phalanx system, ATK supplies medium-caliber ammunition for Apache helicopters, A-10 Thunderbolt II aircraft, and Bradley infantry fighting vehicles. Due to outstanding reliability, accuracy, and lethality, the company's 20mm, 25mm, and 30mm rounds are effective in anti-armor, anti-materiel, antipersonnel, ground suppression, air defense, and shipboard defense roles.

ATK is a $3.1 billion advanced weapon and space systems company employing approximately 14,000 people in 23 states.
