ADI To Refit Aussie Replenishment Ship (Sept. 5)

One of Navy's two underway replenishment ships, HMAS SUCCESS, will under go a major refit at Garden Island, Sydney.

The contract for the refit, worth about $30 million, has been awarded to ADI. The contract will be signed today on board HMAS SUCCESS at Garden Island.

The refit is expected to take about five months with all trials planned to be completed by February next year.

The 15 year old, 17933 tonne HMAS SUCCESS can replenish diesel and aviation fuel as well as goods such as food, fresh water, munitions, stores and spares to other Navy ships at sea.

The contract covers the overhauling of the ship's engines, refurbishing the cargo fuel tanks and associated fuel transfer systems, and overhauling accommodation services such as air conditioning.

An upgraded galley and crew cafeteria will be installed along with other enhancements, such as environmentally friendly solid waste disposal equipment and reworked cargo storage arrangements.

Defence and ADI entered into a teaming arrangement earlier this year to work together in developing the statement of work and contract.

This arrangement exemplified the Governments commitment to have Defence improve its interaction with industry and develop more innovative work practices.

Independent assessments throughout the contract will ensure that taxpayers receive value for money through the use of independent assessments.
