Argentina Selects Northrop Grumman for Major Radar Modernization Program

BALTIMORE--- Argentina's Ministry of Defense has selected Northrop Grumman Corporation's Electronic Sensors and Systems Sector (ES3) to develop, install and integrate the Argentine National Radarization Program (NRP).
The 26-month NRP project, valued at $185.3 million plus taxes on imported equipment, will upgrade Argentina's air traffic control system in the northern and central regions of the country to improve safety and efficiency for commercial air traffic. The country's air surveillance system in these areas also will be upgraded with new ground-based radars to monitor Argentine air sovereignty.
Northrop Grumman will install new radars and operations centers, refurbish existing facilities and upgrade Argentina's communications network to insure reliable communications between all system elements, all aircraft transiting the area and various outside agencies.
"Argentina soon will have a leading-edge airspace monitoring system that will provide improved safety for commercial air traffic and complete surveillance of northern and central Argentine airspace,'' said Robert P. Iorizzo, vice president and general manager of the Command, Control, Communications, Intelligence and Naval Systems business unit at ES3. "The NRP will be one of the foremost, countrywide, joint use air surveillance systems of its kind in the world.''
Components of the system to be provided include the Airspace Management System-2000 operations facility, which can be used to perform both air traffic control and air surveillance functions. Northrop Grumman will also provide the ASR-12, the newest field-proven, fully solid state terminal approach control radar.
Teamed with Northrop Grumman on the project are Siemens S.A. and Alenia Marconi Systems S.p.A. Siemens will supply and integrate the system's telecommunications network as well as be responsible for the infrastructure required for the new and upgraded operations, radar and communications facilities. Alenia Marconi Systems S.p.A. will provide fixed and transportable RAT 31DL surveillance radars and Monopulse Secondary Surveillance Radars.
Northrop Grumman Electronic Sensors and Systems Sector supplies a broad range of customer-tailored airspace management systems and has delivered more than 850 ground radar systems to 40 countries.
Northrop Grumman Corporation, headquartered in Los Angeles, is a leading designer, systems integrator and manufacturer of military surveillance and combat aircraft, defense electronics and systems, airspace management systems, information systems, marine systems, precision weapons, space systems, and commercial and military aerostructures.
