**Chile Buys 118 Leopard IIs from Germany (Mar 27)

(**Update: Rheinmetall comment added March 28)

The [Chilean] Ministry of National Defence has announced that it has successfully concluded the procedures for the acquisition from Germany of 118 Leopard II tanks, intended to replace and upgrade the Army’s tank inventory.

Specifically, 131 Leopard I tanks will be retired over the coming months.

Although the agreement for the purchase was signed on February 10, the Chilean Government, at the request of German authorities, delayed its announcement until Germany had completed its own internal administrative procedures related to the sale. (ends)

Comment by Peter Erich Baumer, Sales Director South America Rheinmetall Defence:

"We're naturally very proud that the Leopard 2, which has proved so successful in Europe, is now set to make its debut in South America. Rheinmetall Defence will provide the Chilean Army with logistical support to help them field the new tank, as well as offering various systems for maintaining and upgrading its combat effectiveness, including an improved thermal imaging device. Rheinmetall will also be supplying the Chilean armed forces with new types of ammunition. (.../...)

Apart from the initial stock of ammunition that comes with the tanks (and Rheinmetall is playing a part here, too), we're of course interested in follow-on orders. Owing to the climatic conditions, we reckon that our DM 63 round is particularly well suited to Chile's needs since it contains temperature-insensitive powder.
