Australia Creates Strategic Policy Think-Tank (Oct. 11)

Former journalist and senior Defence official Hugh White has been appointed as head of The Australian Strategic Policy Institute (APSI), Australia's new strategic and defence policy think-tank.

ASPI will provide independent information and fresh ideas to government on Australia's defence, and aims to help Australia make better informed strategic decisions and to broaden debate within the Australian community.

Mr White was a major contributor to last year's Defence 2000 White Paper, and he has had a distinguished career as an intelligence analyst, journalist, ministerial staffer and senior Defence official.

He was Deputy Secretary for Strategy in the Defence Department from 1995 to 2000, was a key adviser to government, and has written a number of recent important policy documents,

Membership of the ASPI Board was announced by the Minister for Defence on 5 July 2001. ASPI has been set up as a Company Limited by Guarantee, with directors appointed by Government but given independence to steer the activities of the Institute to achieve its objectives.

Further details about ASPI, including Mr White's CVs, are available at www.aspi.org.au
