British Aerospace To Play Key Role In New Communications System For Hellenic Armed Forces

British Aerospace is to play a major role in a programme to implement the second phase of the HERMES area communications network on behalf of the Hellenic Army General Staff.

The HERMES 2 project, to be managed by Hellenic Aerospace Industry S. A. (HAI), will extend the existing HERMES 1 area communications system to meet the communications needs of the Hellenic First Army. It will provide high levels of improved communications functionality, including automatic message switching, packet switching and highly flexible mobile subscriber access. HERMES 2 both replaces the existing APOLLO system and provides military communications links to Greek air defence systems.

British Aerospace's contribution is based on the manufacture and supply of a wide range of Multi-Role System (MRS) 2000 area communications switches, complete with its integral management system, and the incorporation - for the first time - of this technology in the Single Channel Radio Access (SCRA) supplied by DASA. The comprehensive communication services that will thereby be provided include voice, telegraph, facsimile, high capacity data transfer, message switching and message handling. HERMES 2 will also feature gateways to enable the system to interconnect with other national and NATO systems and networks.
