Austria Ups Volume in Eurofighter Dispute

VIENNA --- Eurofighter has interrupted the negotiations over the Eurofighter contract with the Republic of Austria, Defense Miister Norbert Darabos announced today (Sunday) during a press conference.

Darabos requested Eurofighter’s to return to the negotiating table. Behind this development proceeding it locates "risen nervousness". If Eurofighter should not return to the negotiating table, the ministry will take appropriate steps, such as a unilateral partial or total exit from the program, Darabos said.

"I expect to take the process forward calmly, because our position has considerably improved in recent weeks." (ends)

(Editor’s Note: Darabos said negotiations apparently hit a snag over the government's continued attempts to lower the price of the EUR 1.95 billion purchase.
Eurofighter denied Sunday that it broke off negotiations, saying it merely canceled the next session after a parliamentary inquiry panel indicated it wanted to complete its investigation before further talks were held.

The company remains open to "serious discussions" with the Defense Ministry, the Austria Press Agency quoted spokesman Wolf-Dieter Hoeveler as saying.)
