MINNEAPOLIS ---ATK has been selected by the U.S. Air Force as the sole-source producer of the DSU-33B/B precision proximity sensor, which is used in the Joint Direct Attack Munitions (JDAM) and other air-delivered ordnance.
The company also was awarded two contracts with a combined value of $15.5 million to continue production of the sensor. The first contract, valued at $8.2 million, is the final option to a basic production contract awarded in 1998 that has a total value with all options of over $30 million. The second contract is a new basic production award valued at $7.3 million. If all options on this contract are fully exercised, the total value will be approximately $75 million by the end of 2008.
ATK Precision Fuze, Janesville, Wis., one of four companies that make up ATK's newly formed Precision Systems Group, will produce the DSU-33B/B sensor at its production facility in Janesville, Wis.
"Our proposal to the Air Force was evaluated as the best value, based on a combination of technical approach, price, and experience and performance on the predecessor contract," said Blake Larson, president, ATK Precision Fuze. "The decision by the Air Force continues the work of a highly successful DSU-33B/B government/ATK integrated product team."
"These contracts are great news for ATK and its Janesville facility in particular," said U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan (First District, Wis.). "This is a true win-win situation: the U.S. Air Force and its pilots will continue to benefit from ATK's top-quality production and the Janesville area benefits by keeping these well-paying jobs in our community."
The DSU-33B/B proximity sensor is an all-weather, battery-operated sensor that initiates detonation above the ground, increasing the effectiveness of air-delivered ordnance. The sensor design allows tactical fighter aircraft flown by the U.S. Air Force, U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps, and allied forces to deliver ordnance from both low and high altitudes.
ATK Precision Fuze is a major supplier of precision fuzes and sensors to the U.S. government and a leading producer of lithium batteries for military and aerospace applications. The company has produced over 70 different fuzes and proximity sensors for use in artillery, mortar, rocket, cannon, air-delivered, and special operations systems.
ATK is a $2 billion aerospace and defense company with leading positions in propulsion, composite structures, munitions, and precision capabilities. The company, which is headquartered in Edina, Minn., employs approximately 11,200 people.
