SMS opens its state of the art Multiple Ordnance Assembly and Test facility.

Shorts Missile Systems Ltd (SMS) today announced the official opening of its state of the art purpose built Multiple Ordnance Assembly and Test (MOAT) facility. Located on a 100-acre site near Belfast, the complex is also engaged in the final assembly of the company's Starburst and Starstreak missile systems.

The new facility is designed to cater for flexible manufacturing of a range of missile configurations utilising advanced assembly techniques. As a direct result SMS was awarded the contract to assemble and test the Hellfire II and Longbow missiles for the UK attack helicopter programme. This project has the potential to provide 34 new jobs over a three year period.

At the same time as this announcement the company was presented with the prestigious Investors in People (IiP) award - the national standard which recognises an organisation's commitment and action to developing its people as part of its business strategy.

Speaking at the official opening today John McFall, Minister for the Economy said:

"This is a superb facility and will enable SMS to compete more effectively for work on new missile contracts. It will provide continuity of employment for the existing workforce in the short term, and in the longer term puts SMS in a strong position for new employment opportunities. In addition, the IiP award is national recognition of the company's commitment and action to develop its people. It is this culture which has helped SMS to become the success that it is today."

Shorts Missile Systems is a world leader in the design and manufacture of close air defence systems, and its products have found great success in service with 56 armed forces around the world. The company is the UK's prime contractor in Very Short Range Air Defence Systems and employs over 500 people based in Belfast and Paris. SMS is a joint venture company between Short Brothers plc, a subsidiary of Bombardier Inc. and Thomson-CSF, the defence electronics corporation.
