NEWTOWN, Conn.---According to Forecast International / DMS, Incorporated, aerial target systems will continue to play a critical role in maintaining the combat efficiency of a nation's armed forces. In "The Market for Aerial Target Systems," Forecast International projects sellers of aerial target systems to generate $3 billion in revenues over the next 10 years.
"Aerial targets provide a military force with realistic threat simulators for training and weapon systems development," said Larry Dickerson, Forecast International analyst. "Reconnaissance UAVs may monopolize the media limelight, but aerial targets allow a military force to hone its combat fighting edge," said Dickerson. "I expect suppliers to produce more than 13,000 aerial target systems over the next decade," added Dickerson.
According to Forecast International, the leading provider of low-end aerial targets is Meggitt. Meggitt manufactures the Banshee and Voodoo series. High-end aerial target providers include Northrop Grumman, BAE Systems, and Orbital Sciences. Northrop Grumman produces the BQM-74E, BAE Systems builds the QF-4 full-scale aerial target, and Orbital Sciences manufactures the Supersonic Sea-Skimming Target.
Dickerson says future procurement competitions will enable firms to increase their share of the aerial target systems market. "The United States is planning to begin procurement of a new generation of sub-scale and full-scale aerial targets. These contracts could be worth close to $700 million through 2011," said Dickerson. "The United Kingdom and France are also looking to acquire new generation aerial targets," added Dickerson.
