Air Force's Newest and Most Advanced Air Combat Training Facility Passes Site Systems Tests with Peak Load Operation

SAN DIEGO---The U.S. Air Force's newest and most advanced air combat training facility, the Nellis Air Combat Training System (NACTS), has successfully completed site systems testing at Nellis Air Force Base, Nev., Cubic Defense Systems officials announced. Cubic Defense Systems is a subsidiary of San Diego-based Cubic Corp..

"The site systems test was extremely successful and validated the system's performance during maximum loading conditions,'' said Alex Koenig, Cubic's NACTS program manager. "This paves the way for system turnover to the U.S. Air Force within the next two months.''

Once NACTS begins operational service in September, it will be the largest and most sophisticated air combat training system in the world. Cubic Defense Systems is building and installing the new air combat training system under contract with the U.S. Air Force.

The "peak load'' test that was conducted July 23 confirmed the operation of NACTS at full capacity. The tests involved flying 39 NACTS pods on 27 different aircraft, including two A-10s that carried three pods each, six F-15s carrying up to three pods, and 19 F-16s with single pods.

During the month-long series of site systems testing, Cubic Defense Systems demonstrated the interoperability between the ground systems and instrumentation pods, as well the system's high data-rate capabilities, tracking accuracy and interface to the aircraft weapon's systems.

NACTS allows pilots to engage in mock air battles with simulated weapons, and scores their performance with a fully automated electronic system. After the mission, the pilots can review their performance with their instructors on three-dimensional graphics displays.

NACTS increases the number of high-activity aircraft for "Red Flag'' exercises from 36 to 100 -- nearly tripling the number of players that can be tracked simultaneously. It also increases the number of surface-to-air missile launcher threats from 30 to 75, and doubles the number of simultaneous weapons simulations from 50 to 100.

Cubic Defense Systems developed the first air combat training system for the U.S. Navy in May 1971, known as the Air Combat Maneuvering Range (ACMR). In July 1976, the U.S. Air Force installed a more advanced version of the ACMR, known as the Air Combat Maneuvering Instrumentation (ACMI), at Nellis AFB, Nev.

Additional ACMI hardware was installed at Nellis in the mid-1980s and the Red Flag Measurement and Debriefing System (RFMDS) was also installed at that time.

Since it pioneered air combat training systems in the early 1970s, Cubic Defense Systems has installed 23 air combat training systems throughout the world.
