MOSCOW --- The Russian Aerospace Force /VKS/ involved in the operation against the Islamic State militant group /IS, banned in Russia/ uses the latest Su-25SM3 single-seat ground attack aircraft fitted with Vitebsk-25 EW system, a source in the defense industry said.

Su-25SM3 is the latest modification of the famous Su-25 ground attack aircraft. This type of flying machine differs from the previous model, Su-25SM, in that it has the Vitebsk-25 EW system developed by Ekran Research Institute /incorporated by Radio-Electronic Technologies Concern, KRET/.

The system includes an L-370-3S digital active jamming station. Vitebsk can not only locate the likely enemy’s azimuth and the radar emission type, but also suppress the signal in different frequency ranges. The system also comprises protective devices against various missiles.

Over time, the attack aircraft will also receive a laser jamming station that will ensure destruction of an attacking missile or its neutralization by a TV /laser/ homing head. This system is fitted not only on Su-25SM3 fixed-, but also Ka-52 and Mi-8AMTSh rotary-wing aircraft.

In addition, unclassified sources report that the new attack aircraft can use an expanded variety of airborne weapons.

Previously, Vladimir Mikheyev, deputy head of KRET said that by the end of 2015 the Russian Aerospace Force /VKS/ will receive more than ten modernized Su-25 attack aircraft fitted with new dedicated Vitebsk-25 EW systems, avionics, and weapon control systems. In the words of Mikheyev, the modernization will produce "a principally new aircraft."

The attack aircraft showed itself as "an undefeatable machine" whose airframe ensures "multiple replacement of the entire onboard equipment."

The Modernized Su-25M /NATO reporting name Frogfoot-A/ is designed for supporting troops by day and night in all weathers. The aircraft differs from the baseline Su-25 in that it has an onboard PrNK-25SM Bars aiming and navigation unit for operation with the GLONASS satellite navigation system The cockpit instruments too underwent a serious upgrade, i.e. multifunction displays and a new indicator on the windscreen have been added instead of the old sights.

Su-25SM can use a variety of weapons, including precision types. The aircraft is armed with GSh-302 30 mm double- barreled cannon. The maximum flight speed in a ground-hugging mode is 975 km/h, flight radius 500 km. The aircraft is powered by two RD-195 turbo-jet engines, each with a thrust of 4,500 kgf in the maximum mode.-
