AAI, Giat Team For New Mobile 105mm Gun (Oct. 23)

HUNT VALLEY, Md. --- AAI Corporation has formed a teaming relationship with the French land weapon manufacturer Giat Industries to produce a new mobile, rugged, and lightweight 105mm artillery gun for use by U.S. forces.

Under the teaming pact, AAI will develop, produce, and market a U.S.-made advanced variant of the Giat Industries’ 105mm gun that has been developed, tested, and proven to high performance standards and is already fielded with some allied military forces.

Headquartered in Versailles Satory, France, Giat is a leading European defense firm engaged in the design, manufacture, and maintenance of weapon and armored systems and ammunition.

AAI Corporation, a subsidiary of United Industrial Corporation, is a leader in a variety of U.S. defense markets, including unmanned aerial vehicle systems, such as the U.S. Army’s Shadow Tactical Unmanned Aerial Vehicle system. In addition, the company is the North American source for the highly effective Advanced Mortar System (AMOS), a superior mobile firepower weapon system available for U.S. forces.

“AAI Corporation is excited about this initiative with Giat Industries, an outstanding defense systems company,” said Frederick M. Strader, president and chief executive officer of AAI and United Industrial Corporation.

“World conditions today demand the most capable artillery systems available for U.S. forces. This teaming relationship between AAI and Giat links a proven armament system with outstanding mobility to ensure U.S. war fighters the best weapon to achieve their mission,” Strader added.

M. Luc Vigneron, Giat Industries chief executive officer, said “This teaming agreement demonstrates our strong willingness to cooperate with industrial partners in the international arena.”

AAI’s 105mm artillery gun is lightweight and mobile. Weighing only 3,300 pounds, it is the lightest towed 105mm gun in service throughout the world, including NATO countries. It can be internally transported in a CH-53E helicopter or an MV-22 tilt- rotor, making it an ideal artillery system for rapid deployment with expeditionary forces.

The gun sets up quickly and simply and is operational on a battlefield in 30 seconds, providing a rate of fire of 12 rounds per minute with a range exceeding 18 kilometers.

In addition to land force weapons systems and unmanned aerial vehicle systems, AAI defense technologies and products include training and simulation systems, such as maintenance trainers for U.S. Air Force C-17 Globemaster III heavylifters, and automated aircraft test and maintenance equipment, such as Joint Service Electronic Combat System Testers (JSECST) used to affirm electronic warfare capabilities aboard U.S. and allied aircraft.

Giat Industries is a leading European armaments company providing French and other military forces with total land defense system solutions. Its products, which are mostly combat proven, include artillery systems, armored tanks (Leclerc main battle tank), and vehicles as well as specialized and standard ammunitions.

Based on decades of expertise, Giat has developed and produced the 105LG Light Gun to meet the new requirements of expeditionary operations by conventional, amphibious, airborne, and special operations forces. The company also manufactures the Caesar 155mm wheeled artillery system. In cooperation with a Swedish firm it is producing the BONUS, an anti-tank top-attack artillery shell. Other Giat activities include digitalized battle management and information systems, such as Finders and Fast-Hit Artillery Fire Control Systems.
