For some time now, the [Swedish] navy's units have had the ability to detect and operate against unmanned craft, the so-called drones. A naval joint training effort has made it possible to quickly spread the skills, which have already been used on several occasions.

The changed world situation and experiences from the war in Ukraine have resulted in the navy acquiring new equipment in a short time to act against unmanned aerial vehicles, so-called drones. The systems used go by the collective name C-UAS, which is an abbreviation of Counter Unmanned Aerial Systems. It is simple to use and makes it easy to detect unmanned craft, affect its ability to navigate and transmit video but also cause it to lose contact with its pilot.

"With the help of the system, the navy can now also act against threats in the air over our protective objects. The equipment complements the security guards' toolbox, which with the support of the Security Act can act fully against drones and also the operator who flies the drone some distance from the protected object,” says Anders Engqvist, the navy's head of security.

The equipment has been used in a number of surveillance operations, including during the naval battle days in Karlskrona earlier this year. The Navy has on a couple of occasions detected drones and also identified the operator flying the drone.

In parallel with the introduction, the legal tools for the system have been clarified so that immediate action can be taken against unmanned systems. In these there is also room to act against the person who handles the control, i.e. the operator.

The systems used by the Navy do not require any special training units. With a very short training, the system can be handled as a kind of simpler electronic anti-aircraft defense.
