STOCKHOLM --- The Swedish Defense Materiel Administration, FMV, has ordered a new air defense system from Saab. It will be tested to provide knowledge and experience before a larger procurement of short-range air defense systems for the army.
The new anti-aircraft system consists of two parts, sensor unit and fire unit, mounted on Swedish-made tracked vehicle 410. One tracked vehicle has a radar unit based on Saab's model Giraffe 1X, the other tracked vehicle has a fire unit with the RBS 70 NG missile.
"RBS 70 is a well-proven air defense system in the Swedish Armed Forces. The purpose of the acquisition is to investigate the possibilities of increasing the system's mobility and thereby improving protection against air threats by integrating RBS 70 and sensor units on a tracked vehicle," says Christer Mellgren, project manager at FMV.
Deliveries will take place continuously starting at the beginning of 2025.
