MINDEF Signs Contract for Next Generation Armoured Fighting Vehicle

The Next Generation AFV will replace the ageing ULTRA M113 AFV which has been in service since the early 70s.

The Singapore Ministry of Defence has awarded a contract to Singapore Technologies Engineering Ltd (ST Engineering) for the production and supply of the Next Generation Armoured Fighting Vehicle (AFV).

The Next Generation AFV will replace the ageing ULTRA M113 AFV which has been in service since the early 70s. The Next Generation AFV will provide our armoured forces with enhanced firepower, protection, mobility and situational awareness.

The delivery of the Next Generation AFV will begin in 2019.

The Next Generation Armoured Fighting Vehicle (AFV) is a modern armoured fighting vehicle that will deliver enhanced network-warfighting capability for the future mechanised force. It will be equipped with state-of-the-art systems that will allow our armoured forces to be better networked. Its weapon systems include a remote-controlled 30mm cannon and 7.62mm coaxial machine gun with improved fire control for enhanced accuracy.

MINDEF and the SAF have always taken a rigorous and prudent approach in planning for our defence needs. The Next Generation AFV was selected after a rigorous evaluation process to be the most cost-effective solution that best meets the SAF’s requirements. We are unable to disclose the value or other details due to contract confidentiality.

The Next Generation Armoured Fighting Vehicle (AFV) will be the mainstay of the Singapore Armed Forces' (SAF) mechanised forces, operating alongside the Bionix Infantry Fighting Vehicle, to fulfil the SAF's operational requirements.

Developed together with the Defence Science and Technology Agency and our local defence industry, the Next Generation AFV will provide our armoured forces with enhanced firepower, protection, mobility and situational awareness.

Initiated in 2006 to replace the ageing ULTRA M113 AFV which has been in service since the early 70s, the delivery of the Next Generation AFV will begin in 2019.
