CURITIBA, Brazil --- The armored vehicle M109 A5, newly arrived in Brazil, will be exhibited at the Defense and Security Fair LAAD 2017, which will take place next week, April 4-7, in the city of Rio de Janeiro.
The armored vehicle is part of the fleet acquired from the United States through Foreign Military Sales, a US government program for the sale of defense products and services.
Two other armored units are already in the Regional Military Maintenance Park of the 5th Military Region (Pq R Mnt / 5), in Curitiba (PR), and are being prepared to be used for training. Another 32 are in the refurbishing and modernization phase, expected to be delivered next year, when they will be employed in the 3rd and 5th Self-propelled Artillery Group, located in Santa Maria (RS) and Curitiba, respectively.
With the modernization, the M109 A5 will receive embedded electronics for vehicle navigation and weapon positioning, including GPS, accelerometers, sensors and tube radar. The main objective is to implement a digitized system that gives greater agility and accuracy to the Brazilian Army's Field Artillery.
